Organic Sheets – why you need them and how they can help to detox your bedroom. This little change might yield a big difference.
Lately, as I’ve been working to detox my home, one of the things I’m focusing on changing is my bedroom, and specifically the bedding that I’m using. I’m really not sure that there is anything better than sleeping on a clean, soft, luxurious set of sheets. I love the decadence of new sheets and the way it seems to improve my sleep in the best way.
Now I’ve purchased more than a few sets of sheets in my life and I’ve learned that cheap sheets are not the way to go. This is a purchase that you will literally use for 8 plus hours every single day – you deserve to have the very best that you can afford.
Organic cotton is the best choice if you are looking to buy non-toxic sheets. Non-organic cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops there is, and all of those pesticides end up in the finished product. You don’t want that in your bed! I decided to get a really nice set of organic cotton sheets to complement my bedroom detox project, and I am so glad that I did.
How do you know that your sheets are actually made from organic cotton? Just like gluten free food products, look for the certification! My newest king-sized sheets from Savvy Rest are certified to the most stringent GOTs standard. According to the GOTs regulations, this means that, “GOTS ensures the organic status of textiles from harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing all the way to labelling in order to provide credible assurance to the consumer.” In case all of those words don’t make a lot of sense to you, this just means that Savvy Rest is using the best available cotton to make their sheets, and that their manufacturing is certified organic as well.
The story behind the Savvy Rest company is an interesting one. It’s founder, Michael Penny, was working in the commercial mattress industry where he learned more than he wanted to know about the chemicals contained in traditional mattresses. As a person who tried to live a healthy lifestyle, he couldn’t bear to be sleeping on a mattress like that. He decided to go into business producing organic bedding, and the brand was born. Savvy Rest now operates 4 retail stores in 3 different states, and has a booming online business as well. They make and sell mattresses, bedding, crib mattresses, sofas, and more – and all of it is organic.
If you visit their website, and I hope you will, you’ll find a well organized catalog of products for sleep, and each item has an excellent explanation of the materials involved and why they are good, not only for the environment, but good for the quality of your sleep. One thing I’m looking at next are their mattresses and mattress toppers. Again, these aren’t inexpensive, but I’m thinking long term health for me and my family, and I really want to make that happen for all of us! If your budget is lower, take a look at the mattress toppers. Adding one to an older mattress (which has already off-gassed most of it’s toxins) can be a really good, less expensive option for detoxing your bedroom. Starting with organic cotton sheets (like I have) is also a great first step.
