But what actually is the difference between and air fryer and an air oven?
An air fryer is a countertop appliance, typically with a round footprint and an egg shaped appearance. There is a basket that holds your food items while they are cooking, and a heating element at the top of the machine with a fan to move that hot air around.
You may see air fryers that work slightly differently than I just described, for example my air fryer is actually square instead of round, but overall most air fryers work in this way.
In comparison, an air fryer oven is typically a countertop appliance that resembles a toaster oven, and in most cases can double as a toaster oven too. Air fryer ovens are generally larger than air fryers, and can hold more food, often on trays at multiple levels. Air fryer ovens can have rotisserie functions, and low heat applications like dehydrating meats or drying herbs. Finally, air ovens can air fry, just like their smaller, rounder counterparts.

These points should point you in the right direction when trying to decide, air fryer vs. oven.
Air Fryer ovens are generally larger than air fryers. They take up more counter space and will likely stay on your counter rather than going in a cupboard when not in use. You can fit more food into an air fryer oven, which may make it the better choice for larger families. Someone cooking for one or two people may prefer to use a smaller air fryer.
You will find that air fryer ovens can do more than the typical air fryer. Baked goods, jerky, full meals can all be created in air ovens, while air fryers are great at making crispy foods only, with the occasional foray into other culinary activities. Ask yourself what you intend to cook in your air fryer. If it’s just french fries – stick with the smaller model.
An air fryer oven is going to cost a bit more than an air fryer. This makes sense, based on the fact that it’s a larger appliance. If you are ready to invest in something, go for the air oven. Otherwise, start off with an air fryer that fits into your budget.
