Creating Allergy Friendly Blessings Bags is a great family project that the entire family can get involved in. Stuff your bag with allergy-friendly treats and essentials.
Not only did we see historic sights but we also learned a lot about people. Our kids saw people living on the streets in DC. This was something they have not seen before. It brought about a lot of discussion. Our kids were aware that a local organization close to home works with the community to provide a dinner each Friday to people in need. This organization, like many others provides food that is often cheap to purchase and has protein. Many times this happens to be peanut butter or hard boiled eggs.
In our food allergy world, that is two of the TOP 8 most common allergens. My kids started to ask, “What about people with food allergies that live in shelters?” Great question. From this question, stemmed many conversations and the kids decided to take action. While our action is small, we hope that the few it will reach will have a great impact.
We have partnered with Enjoy Life Foods to create some allergy friendly blessings bags. Because the kids created these bags, they wanted to make them kid focused. Enjoy Life Foods was gracious enough to donate the three food items that we requested. All ELF products are free from the TOP 8 most common allergens. That is huge. The products are made with care in a dedicated gluten-free and nut-free facility. That means even the workers do not consume those products!
We requested three of our favorite products from ELF and ones that we thought would be a good fit for our bags. The first product is one of the seed and fruit mixes. While this mix is tasty it also provides 4 grams of protein and some sweetness!
We also requested some Cocoa Loco Bars. We’ve eaten a lot of these bars in our house. I mean, I am talking like 1-2 a day for a long time. My little guy lived on these. He loved them and they were safe! We even got Grandma hooked on them! These bars are just one of several mouth watering bars from the chewy bar line!
And to top off our food list, we added in some mini cookies! What kiddo doesn’t like cookies? So the kids thought it would be great to include those in our Blessings Bags. We choose the Vanilla Honey Graham! YUMMMM
So the first thing that we did after our ELF shipment of allergy-friendly foods arrived, was we headed to the dollar store. We had a budget in mind and we set forth in the store. We had a lot of discussion in the store as to what would be important to put into the bags. Ultimately, the kids were very thoughtful and insightful about what the perfect items for the bags might be.
We found so many items for our bags, take a peak! Each item had a purpose and a beautiful thought behind it!
So to start, we laid out all the goodies on the floor. Kinda creating an assembly line of sorts, but in a circle!
Then the kids grabbed some gallon sized baggies and began to stuff them full of our goodies! The Blessings Bags were chalk full!
This literally was a furry family activity! Just look at Cabi The Tabby checking things out. She was certainly acting as supervisor that day!
As we stuffed the bags, we talked about where we wanted to deliver them too. Whether we wanted to take them directly to the soup kitchen, a local food pantry or other ideas we had. It is amazing the drive behind kids when they feel the purpose. I hope that this inspires them to do more good in our community!
Even Gia The Dog got in on the project. She was the official sniffer of the items. She checked and cleared all items to be put into the bags. As you can see from this picture, she really approved of the smell of those cookies! ha!
We are pretty excited about our little allergy friendly blessings bags. We hope that they will make a big difference in the world of somebody with food allergies that visits the shelter or food pantry where we drop them off. Just providing an allergy friendly, safe snack when there might not be another food option is huge. There is a need. We hope that we filled at least a small part of that need in our community!
Let’s talk! Leave me a comment telling me if you’ve ever done a service project with your kids? Have you worked specifically with a homeless shelter or food pantry? I’d love to hear!
*Thank you from the bottom of my grateful heart to Enjoy Life Foods for giving us allergy-friendly products to put into these bags and for sponsoring our efforts! You made this possible!
