This double chocolate muddy buddies treat, aka vegan puppy chow is not only peanut-free but dairy-free and gluten-free!
Dear Puppy Chow,
Oh…how I have missed you! It has been way too long. You are made from different ingredients this time around, but you taste just as good….if not better!.
Why is it called puppy chow?
Yes it’s called puppy chow because that’s what it resembles. Basically it looks sort of like dog food. But if you have never snacked on this treat, trust me the taste is nothing like dog food!
Usually it’s made with a rice chex cereal, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. But today we are making a vegan, gluten free version.
A Gluten-Free Dessert
You can call this a snack or party food. But it’s perfect to eat any time of day. It’s one of my favorite gluten-free desserts that I’ve made.
In fact, here are some more gluten-free desserts you should try next.
How to Make Vegan Puppy Chow
With a peanut allergy among others in the house, we have been avoiding puppy chow until now! But it’s back! There is just something about melting all that goodness together and mixing it with crunchy Chex!
Here are my favorite allergy-friendly ingredients:
- Sunbutter (or other favorite nut butter)
- Chocolate (we used dairy free Enjoy Life chocolate chips)
- Gluten-free Chex
- Non-dairy butter
- Powdered sugar
Using a small sauce pan, combine and melt the chocolate chips, sunbutter, butter and vanilla.
Pour the box of chex into a stock pot or large bowl.
Next, pour the sauce onto the chex, give a quick and gentle stir.
Dump in powdered sugar, stir to coat.
YUM, doesn’t it look good?? Have you tried Chocolate Puppy Chow before?
Is it Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies?
What do you call it? It’s a sweet Chex mix full of chocolate, sunbutter, and powdered sugar. When I call it puppy chow, some people get confused and I think I made a treat for Gia. But this has chocolate in it, so it’s definitely not for her.
How long does puppy chow for humans last?
Well in our house not that long. But you can store your puppy chow in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 1 week. Or store it at room temperature for a few days.
