Living in the midwest, Summer is one of my family’s favorite seasons. We can be outdoors most of the time and we really enjoy spending time as a family being active. It’s much easier to get some exercise in while it’s warm outside, but there are precautions you should take to be healthy while playing in the sun. Here are my best tips for a healthy summer.
- Stay Hydrated
Most of us know that hydration is important, but it’s especially important in the summer months because our bodies use extra water in the form of sweat to cool us off. Having adequate amounts of water in our bodies also keeps our internal organs cool and can prevent the scary summer threat of heat stroke.
Plan to drink a minimum of eight full glasses of water per day, and more than that if you are outside in the heat. If you find yourself feeling thirsty, you are already starting to dehydrate and should start drinking water right away. My best tip for staying hydrated is to always carry a bottle of water with you, and refill it throughout the day. We really like these reusable water bottles on Amazon.
- Wear Sunscreen
The sun feels great on my skin, especially after a long, cold winter. The thing to remember is that it feels just as good through a layer of high quality sunscreen. Your skin is the largest organ on your body. It protects your internal organs from the elements, but you need to protect it from those harmful sun rays that can cause burning, rashes, and skin cancer.
Sunscreen should be applied every 2 hours while you’re outside, and after any swimming or sweating. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the often forgotten tops of the ears, hair part line, and feet too – those spots get lots of sun and can burn quickly! I use California Baby suncare products for the whole family – this brand is gluten, soy, and chemical free and works just as well as chemical based sunscreens.
- Protect Your Eyes
Not only are they an amazing fashion accessory, but sunglasses are the best way to protect your eyes from the sun. While you may not feel “sunburn” in your eyes, the sun’s rays can cause irreversible damage to our delicate eye tissues, and ultimately lead to macular degeneration, cataracts, and other disturbances of vision. Find sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVB and UVA rays and wear them any time you are outdoors.
For those of us who wear glasses, it can be difficult to find prescription sunglasses that are inexpensive, stylish, and convenient to wear. LensCovers are perfect for that! These are sunglasses that fit perfectly over your normal prescription glasses. They come in 5 different sizes to fit any type of lenses, and the extra small size is great for children and adolescents to use. My 7 year old does not have prescription glasses but he has a small sized gold pair that he loves! I have been personally wearing and testing these out since March! I took them on spring break and loved them! I even had my husband and my mom test them out! The result was “thumbs up” all around! ALL of the LensCovers are polarized! The best part is that they are only about $15, so if you lose them it’s not as big of a loss, especially compared to prescription sunglasses that can cost upwards of $200+.
I hope that you and your family enjoy every minute of this summer, and I know that these tips will help to keep everyone safe and happy until Autumn comes again.
