We ate these up so quick and needed more! I adapted the recipe from here.
How to Make Vegan and Gluten-Free Donut Holes
The secret to making crispy donut holes is to use crispy gluten-free cereal for the outer coating. Oh and use plenty of sugar.
Ingredients
These are the ingredients you will need:
- Vegan butter
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Gluten-Free Flour
- Crispy Gluten-Free Cereal
- Baking Powder
- Salt
- Vegetable Shortening
- Non-Dairy Milk
Baked Not Fried
These crispy treats are baked in the oven at 425 degrees for less than 20 minutes. When they come out, they will be super hot and perfectly crispy! If you want them a little crisper, just bake them a few more minutes.
How to make these baked donut holes:
-
In a small pan, melt butter. Pour butter into its own bowl. In a new bowl combine sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
-
In a bowl mix flour, cereal, sugar, baking powder and salt. Fold in shortening.
-
Stir until mixture crumbly. Stir in milk.
-
Roll mixture into 1 inch balls with your hands.
- Oven Directions: Place donut balls onto a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bake at 425F for 12 minutes.
-
Air Fryer Directions:Place donut holes into the air fryer. Air Fryer at 380 degrees F for 6 minutes. At the 3 minute mark, give the air fryer basket a quick shake.
-
When donut holes are done cooking, carefully remove the air fryer donut holes. Carefully (they will be hot) dip each ball into "coating mixture".

these look so yummy!
Thanks Kimberly!
Made these today for a special event at my three year old son's school. They were a hit! When I picked him up this afternoon, he said "Momma, I want those donuts every day!" A few things that I will modify for future: make only 1/2 the coating (I threw out at least half and they were adequately covered), not have them touch (side-by-side) in the pan (the coating can come off when pulled apart), and take them out about minute 10 and roll them a bit (so the coating is cooked/crispy on all sides. These were just for my taste, however--others may not even care given how tasty they come out! Oh, and I had some stale GF Rice Krispies and they worked well. Thank you for this recipe!
Amy that is fantastic! AND I very much appreciate your GREAT feedback and suggestions!! I am so glad that you son and his friends LOVED them 🙂 🙂
I've gotten a lot of milage out of your recipe! Just now used my new Wilton donut pan--six donut forms so you can bake your own. Rolled the dough into a snake and then pressed into a sprayed donut form. Spooned on some of the butter coating and baked for 8 mins at 400 degrees in my convection oven. Holy frijoles! Like cake donuts, but GF and vegan!!! Thanks again for posting!!!!
Amy, thank you SO much for coming back to let me know! Awesome tip!! I just bought a donut making on sale today at Target. I may try them in there! YUMMO
I didnt have rice krispies, used smashed corn flakes instead and they came out very tasty.
Awesome, thank you for sharing! 🙂
Can I use cassava flour for this recipe?
I haven't tried that yet. I do have some at home and will eventually try it, but it will be a while. If you try let me know how it goes 🙂
I plan to bake these ahead of time for camping;can they be frozen?
Hi Carol, sorry for the delay in my response I was out of town. I haven't tried that if you try please let me know 🙂
I doubled the recipe but added 1 tsp vanilla and used Rice Krispies as suggested. Very delicious and easy. The double recipe made about 5 dozen. I love the baking option and have young grandchildren allergic to eggs and dairy!
Hi Carol, thank you for taking the time to come back and tell me. That makes my heart so happy that your young grandchildren enjoyed them!! Thank you for telling us about your additions as well :). YUM!!
Yes these donut holes froze very well.
Yay!! That is great to hear! Thanks for letting me know! 🙂
