VEGAN BUFFALO SAUCE RECIPE
I love hot sauce. I put it on everything! This Vegan Buffalo Sauce is perfect on crunchy tofu or cauliflower wings. It has just enough spice to please my mouth, but it's also so creamy and rich from the melted vegan butter.
This recipe is 100% vegan, but you'll never taste the difference. The key to buffalo sauce is using the perfect hot sauce with that bright red color and subtle spicy tang.
But you can't just use hot sauce to make buffalo sauce. The sauce that's famous on chicken wings is a blend of Franks Red Hot with butter, margarine, or vegan butter. My version is extra delicious with a few added seasonings too.
INGREDIENTS IN VEGAN BUFFALO SAUCE
Hot sauce: If you want the most traditional Buffalo sauce, you need to use Frank's Red Hot Original hot sauce. It's that perfect red color with just enough spice!
Vegan butter: The key to vegan buffalo sauce is melted vegan butter. It's half the sauce and makes it so much more luscious than basic hot sauce. Use your favorite brand. I like Earth Balance sticks though.
Garlic powder: Everything is better with garlic powder! It's a little sweeter than fresh garlic but adds so much to this sauce.
Paprika: This beautiful red seasoning brings an extra dash of color and a rich flavor to this homemade sauce.
Cayenne pepper: This spice is no joke! You can always use more or less cayenne pepper to your liking.
Vegan Worcestershire sauce: You only use a dash of this savory brown sauce, but it makes all the difference. Take your Buffalo sauce from basic to extraordinary with this secret ingredient.

IS BUFFALO SAUCE VEGAN?
The legend of Buffalo sauce dates back to 1964 in Buffalo, New York when a local bar owner made chicken wings in a buttery hot sauce for her sons. That night, a new sauce was born.
Since Buffalo sauce is basically just hot sauce and butter, no traditional recipe is vegan. Many also have Worcestershire sauce, which contains anchovies.
However, the swaps to make vegan buffalo sauce are so simple! Ditch the dairy for a plant-based butter, and grab a vegan Worcestershire sauce.
IS FRANKS BUFFALO SAUCE VEGAN?
Franks makes a pre-mixed buttery hot sauce (wing sauce) that is already perfect to add to vegan wings or spicy potatoes. The ingredients include "natural butter flavor", and the company has confirmed that that flavoring is not made with animal products. So yes, Franks Buffalo Wing sauce is Vegan!
IS THERE SUGAR IN BUFFALO SAUCE?
My recipe for vegan buffalo sauce is sugar-free! Some like to add sugar to balance the saltiness a bit, and I'll leave that up to you. Try agave or maple syrup so that it doesn't need to dissolve.
HOW DO YOU MAKE MILD BUFFALO SAUCE?
The beauty of vegan buffalo sauce is it can be customized to any spice level! Since buffalo sauce is essentially half butter and half hot sauce, the butter really tames the spice level while leaving that beautiful tang.
You can use more vegan butter to make buffalo sauce milder, or more hot sauce to make it spicier.
You can also adjust the heat with cayenne pepper. If you're looking for a milder buffalo sauce, ditch the cayenne pepper. But if you want it even spicier, add a little extra!
CAN I MAKE BUFFALO SAUCE WITH A DIFFERENT HOT SAUCE?
Franks Red Hot sauce is pretty easy to find at grocery stores, so I suggest picking some up to make this recipe. It's got the perfect vinegar/spice level.
In a pinch, you can use tabasco or another hot sauce to make vegan buffalo sauce, it just won't be as authentic as it could be!
HOW TO STORE VEGAN BUFFALO SAUCE
Keep your spicy sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Drizzle it on everything until it's gone, then make some more!
