You might be wondering what does tofu taste like? Asking what does tofu taste like is a common question, the answer is not as clear cut.
Welcome to What Does Tofu Taste Like
But seriously, what does tofu taste like? The most basic simple answer is tofu can taste like almost anything. Tofu actually absorbs flavors around it.
I prefer to look at tofu like a blank canvas. It is basically tasteless. Tofu starts as a bland, almost flavorless protein source of soy. So consider yourself an artist in the kitchen when it comes to tofu. You are starting with a blank canvas and you need to add flavors to make the kitchen art work beautiful. Think spices, marinades, etc Would I ate plain flavored tofu? No, I would not eat it without some sort of flavoring. It needs something added to it for flavor.
Tofu is probably one of the popular vegetarian protein or vegan protein sources. For people outside of vegetarian or plant based eating, tofu is kinda confusing and often times scary. Tofu however, is super versatile, you can literally recreate many meat dishes with tofu. We are talking about "vegan orange chicken" made with tofu and not with chicken. So in this case, when asked what does tofu taste like, we can answer it tastes very similar to the panda express orange chicken but with a smoother texture. It is the sauce that changes the taste of tofu. In this case, the tofu absorbed the flavor of the orange sauce.
Some people think that tofu has an odd texture. I would agree, but also disagree. Tofu does have a different texture than let's say meat. So if you are comparing the texture of those two protein sources, then you are right, it does have a different texture than what you may already be eating. And quite frankly, change is hard.
When it comes to making tofu for the first time, I suggest a breaded tofu. The breading on the tofu changes the texture of tofu. It makes the outside crunchy and the inside more soft. This helps to eliminate any texture issues people may have with tofu. I suggest breaded tofu with a dipping sauce like Vegan BBQ Sauce. At the end of this post I am going to share several tofu recipes for you to make, so you can decide for yourself what does tofu taste like!
How is tofu made
Tofu is generally made by soaking soybeans in water and then blending the soy beans up. Next you would begin straining out the pulp, which would leave you with soy milk.
Typically, the next step would be adding a coagulant (lemon juice works well) to curdle the soy milk and create curds Then you would begin straining the curdled soy milk again and keep the solids. In the last step, you would find yourself pressing the curds to create a block of tofu.
Different types of tofu are created by editing parts of this process. For example, adding more coagulant will make larger curds which will then make firmer tofu.
That was interesting, right?! But if you are like me, you will probably not be DIYing your tofu, you’ll buy it at the grocery store. Here is where it pays to be informed, because there are many options to consider.
There are different types of Tofu, and each type has multiple styles. Each is good in it’s own ways, and for most cooking methods, there is a best choice.
Types of tofu
Are you wondering about the different types of tofu? There are a few different types of tofu and quite frankly, if you are new to tofu, it might be overwhelming. Below we are going to break down the different types of tofu.
Silken Tofu - Types of Tofu
Silken tofu is made differently than block tofu, in that the soy milk is coagulated, but without curds forming. This means that the end product is smooth, without any lumps or bumps. These styles of tofu require delicate handling in order to avoid turning it to mush. Silken tofu cannot be pressed with a traditional tofu press at home. It is one of the harder types of tofu to deal with as it is very fragile. Silken tofu is a type of tofu often used to thicken soups or sauces.
Soft Silken Tofu is one of the types of tofu. This tofu is best used in sauces, smoothies, desserts, or in baking. It has a very high water content, and won’t hold it’s shape when cooking, but it mixes into just about anything well. Soft Silken Tofu can be used as a substitute for eggs, or yogurt in baking as well. Soft silken tofu cannot be pressed with a traditional tofu press at home.
Firm or Extra Firm Silken Tofu is another one of the types of tofu. These types of silken tofu are nearly the same, with the Extra firm being just slightly firmer. It has a heavier body than soft silken tofu and can stand up to light cooking. Firm silken tofu is wonderful to add to soups or can be battered and quickly fried. Firm silken tofu cannot be pressed with a traditional tofu press at home.
Block Tofu - Types of Tofu
Block tofu is the most widely known and familiar. Block tofu is made by pressing the soy milk curds into a block shape, which can be sliced or diced for cooking. Block tofu is packed in water and sold in plastic trays in the store. When dealing with block types of tofu, we suggest investing in a tofu press so you can press your tofu at home.
Extra Firm Block Tofu is one of the other types of tofu. This tofu is, as its name suggests, is the firmest and heartiest of the block tofu varieties. The curds have been pressed tightly together and the tofu is chewy and dense. Extra firm tofu is the best choice if you’d like to make crispy, fried tofu, or for any meal that requires a hearty bite. When dealing with block types of tofu, we suggest investing in a tofu press so you can press your tofu at home.
Firm Block Tofu is one of the other types of tofu. Slightly softer than extra firm, firm block tofu is a very versatile style that will hold up to most types of cooking. Try it fried, stuffed, boiled, or pan fried in any savory dish. When dealing with block types of tofu, we suggest investing in a tofu press so you can press your tofu at home.
Medium Block Tofu is one of the other types of tofu. This style of block tofu has a higher water content, and is more likely to break apart when cooking. For this reason, it is best suited to cooking methods that don’t require much manipulation, such as baking or cold salads. When dealing with block types of tofu, we suggest investing in a tofu press so you can press your tofu at home.
Soft Block Tofu is one of the other types of tofu. Obviously the softest of the block tofu styles, soft block tofu has a high water content, and doesn’t take well to being pressed. This tofu works well in sweet dishes, as it’s texture mimics firmly set gelatin. While you can technically press this one at home, we have not had good luck with that.
